When the time comes to put your pet down most people feel that doing so in a calm, peaceful and loving atmosphere is the ideal situation. More veterinarians are offering in-home euthanasia service and it is having a profound effect on the difficulties usually associated with this stressful time. Pet owners who opt for this approach have animals that are extremely stressed by illness, pain or old age.
This procedure done at home recognizes that, as a rule, most pets are uncomfortable with any trip to the veterinarian's office. Dr. Ann Brandenburg-Schroeder, whose practice Beside Still Water, exclusively offers assistance when your pet is dying says, "all animals want to die in familiar surroundings". She also believes that in 10 years, maybe less, it will become the most common form of pet euthanasia.
How Euthanasia Differs At Home
"Euthanasia" means a peaceful death. The drugs used to assist an animal to die are anesthetic agents. They are given in quantities that cause alleviation of pain, leading to relaxation and ultimately a coma-like state and death. The exact dose of drugs and the route by which they are given is decided after the vet attains some particulars from the pet owner.
