The new Labor administration which took power in Britain in 1929 was a minority government and this gave Winston hope that, together, the Conservative and Liberal parties would be able to spike its guns. However, the Conservative leader, Stanley Baldwin, did not share Winston’s priorities.

Problems in Egypt

In July 1929, nationalists were making trouble in Egypt, a protectorate within the British Empire, but the Labor government seemed unwilling to deal with the situation. Instead, British troops were withdrawn from Cairo to the Suez Canal, and the High Commissioner in Egypt, George, Lord Lloyd, was ordered home.

Once he got there, Lloyd enlisted Winston’s help to retrieve his position, but the Conservative leader, Stanley Baldwin believed that Egypt was not an issue on which Labor could be fruitfully challenged.
